Overview
This installation guide covers installation Power PTC on VMWare ® ESX server using the vSphere client. The image distributed by CWS Software LLC won’t directly run on ESX, but it can easily be converted into a format that will run on ESX using VMWare’s ® Image Converter tool.
Converting the VMWare image
- Download VMWare vCenter Converter from the VMWare ® Website.
- Install VMWare vCenter Converter on any Windows or Linux workstation.
- Download the most recent VMWare ® version of Power PTC from the downloads section.
- Extract Power PTC using a zip utility.
- Launch the vCenter Converter tool.
- From the menu bar, select Convert Machine.
- Select VMWare Workstation or other WMWare virtual machine for the option Select source type:
- Select the PowerPTC.vmx file from the location where you extracted the Power PTC VMWare image, then click Next.
- Select Virtual Appliance for the option Select Destination type:.
- Set the name as PowerPTC.
- Select a location to store your new image.
- Select Single File (*.ova) for the option Distribution Format: and click Next.
- In the View/Edit Options screen, you will be required to set a Product Name:, click on the edit button to set the name as Power PTC, then click Next.
- On the summary screen, click Next to start the conversion process.
Setting up a Virtual Machine Image
- Open vSphere Client and log into your VMWare ESX server.
- Select File->Deploy OVF Template….
- In the Deploy OVF Template wizard, select option Deploy from file and browse for the ova file you created in the previous steps. Then click Next.
- On the OVF Template Details screen click Next.
- On the Name and Location screen enter the name Power PTC click Next.
- In the Resource Pool screen, select the appropriate pool and click Next.
- In the Datastore Screen, select the appropriate database and click Next.
- On the summary screen, review you settings and click Finish.
Configuring Virtual Machine
- After the Power PTC virtual machine boots, there will be a login prompt.
- Username: powerptc
- Password: password
- Upon logging in you will be prompted to change your password by first entering your current password, which is password, then entering a new password twice.
- Next your will be prompted for your timezone and location settings.
- After your timezone is configured, you will be prompted for network information including:
- IP Address (in format of X.X.X.X or 192.168.1.10)
- Netmask (in format of X.X.X.X or 255.255.255.0)
- Default Gateway (in format of X.X.X.X or 192.168.1.1)
- DNS Server (in format of X.X.X.X or 8.8.8.8)
- After this information is set, Power PTC will do a few basic network tests to ensure you can contact your local network and the Internet. Internet access is required to complete the setup of Power PTC.
- The next step will update your operating system, in this case Ubuntu ® will be updated with the latest security patches and bug fixes. This process may take a few minutes.
- After the operating system has been updated, Power PTC will install the Java ® applications and libraries.
- Lastly, the most recent version of Power PTC will be downloaded and installed.
