Power PTC – Tips and Tricks

Overview

This page is designed to give you recommendations to help your Parent-Teacher conferences be as successful as possible.

Server Setup

Memory Configuration

Power PTC can require a large amount of memory depending on the student enrollment as well as the number of users concurrently accessing the server. By default the VMWare image of Power PTC will only use 512MB of memory, but we recommend most sites use at least 2GB of memory and we would encourage 4GB and up if the it is available.

CPU Configuration

The virtual machine image of Power PTC will only use a single processor core by default. It is recommended to give Power PTC at least 2 processor cores.

Scheduling

Breaks

It is recommended that when creating teacher schedules to give them one break every hour to allow for teachers to catch up in the event that a meeting with a parent runs long.

Problem Prediction

Once you believe that all your students and resources are configured and your master schedule is built, it is recommended to run the problem prediction report. This report will do some very basic checks on your setup. This report is good at reporting if a resource is missing that would cause a parent to not be able to schedule for that course.

Testing

While you are evaluating Power PTC, very often you will want to wipe out data. A common example might be activation codes or resources. You can easily wipe out all the data in selected tables by going to System Config -> Wipe Data.

Troubleshooting

If you are having issues with Power PTC and are not able to track down the cause, it is recommended to take a look at the application log. The most recent 100 lines are viewable from within the Power PTC administrative interface. The application log can be accessed by navigating to the About page, then by clicking on Application Log. This information will be updated every 15 seconds.
