Power PTC VMWare Player/Workstation/Server Installation

Overview

This installation method is the easiest, fastest way to get started with Power PTC. VMWare ® is a platform that allows virtualizing an operating system in another operating system. Power PTC runs on a Linux-based operating system called Ubuntu. This method will go through the steps of setting up a virtual machine player, to allow the user to run Power PTC.

This guide covers installation of Power PTC on VMWare ® Player, but the image will work without modification on VMWare ® workstation and server as well. The process for running Power PTC on these platforms is very similar, if you require assistance with this process please open a support request.

Setting up a Virtual Machine Image

  1. Download VMWare Player from the VMWare ® Website.
  2. Install VMWare Player on your workstation/server that will be running Power PTC.
  3. Download the most recent VMWare ® version of Power PTC from the downloads section.
  4. Extract Power PTC using a zip utility.
  5. Open VMWare ® Player and open the image using File -> Open a Virtual Machine.
  6. Browse to the location of your Power PTC virtual machine image and select the file PowerPTC.vmx.
  7. You will now see a virtual machine titled, PowerPTC. Click on this virtual machine and press Play Virtual Machine.

Configuring Virtual Machine

  1. After the Power PTC virtual machine boots, there will be a login prompt.
    • Username: powerptc
    • Password: password
  2. Upon logging in you will be prompted to change your password by first entering your current password, which is password, then entering a new password twice.
  3. Next your will be prompted for your timezone and location settings.
  4. After your timezone is configured, you will be prompted for network information including:
    • IP Address (in format of X.X.X.X or 192.168.1.10)
    • Netmask (in format of X.X.X.X or 255.255.255.0)
    • Default Gateway (in format of X.X.X.X or 192.168.1.1)
    • DNS Server (in format of X.X.X.X or 8.8.8.8)
  5. After this information is set, Power PTC will do a few basic network tests to ensure you can contact your local network and the Internet. Internet access is required to complete the setup of Power PTC.
  6. The next step will update your operating system, in this case Ubuntu ® will be updated with the latest security patches and bug fixes. This process may take a few minutes.
  7. After the operating system has been updated, Power PTC will install the Java ® applications and libraries.
  8. Lastly, the most recent version of Power PTC will be downloaded and installed.
